2 million HathiTrust e-book records new to Franklin

The Penn Libraries catalog grows by 50% this week, with new records for digitized books from the HathiTrust Digital Library.

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries became an institutional partner of HathiTrust in 2010, two years after the partnership’s creation. Since joining HathiTrust, Penn readers have been able to search, read, and download public-domain e-books directly from the HathiTrust Digital Library. These e-books – 2 million titles, 4 million volumes, roughly 35% of HathiTrust’s archived content – have been digitized by HathiTrust partner libraries as part of Google Books, Internet Archive, and in-house digitization projects.

This week, the Penn Libraries will start offering access to HathiTrust downloadable e-books through Franklin, the Libraries catalog. Penn readers will see a direct link to each e-book in the HathiTrust Digital Library.

Within the HathiTrust Digital Library, Penn readers will be directed to log in using their PennKey to download full-PDFs of public domain works and works made available under Creative Commons licenses. For more information on what’s downloadable in the HathTrust Digital Library, see its FAQ on Printing/Downloading.

The huge record load that took place this week – the largest number of records added to Franklin at one time, growing the Penn Libraries catalog by almost 50% – is made possible by catalog record enhancements and by the home-grown DLA-D technology that has powered Franklin since mid-2013. We have been able to match HathiTrust e-book titles to Franklin records for approximately 200,000 Penn Libraries print books, the remaining HathiTrust e-book titles will appear as new Franklin records. Quarterly updates to Franklin will continue to bring newly-digitized HathiTrust Digital Library titles to Penn readers.

Penn readers should take note that HathiTrust Digital Library records and links will not appear in Classic Franklin. We recommend that you step up to new Franklin if you’re still using Classic Franklin.
