The Penn Libraries have purchased Black Drama, Second Edition, a large online fulltext collection of plays by African and African-diaspora playwrights.
Black Drama, Second Edition, produced by Alexander Street Press, contains fulltext for 1,462 plays written from the mid-1800s to the present by more than 233 playwrights from North America, Anglophone Africa, the Caribbean, and other African diaspora countries. More than 600 plays in the collection – including works by Langston Hughes, Ed Bullins, Charles Fuller Jr., Euba Femi, Derek Walcott, and others – are previously unpublished.
Bibliographic indexing for Black Drama, Second Edition plays permits searching for author characteristics (including nationality, gender, age when writing), performance medium (stage, radio, television, film), genre and settings, and first performance information (including theater name, performers, and production company). The Alexander Street press interface uses PhiloLogic searching , with word truncation, and Boolean and proximity searching. Fulltext for individual plays are presented as Act : Scene web pages.
