U.S. State Department Central Files on Latin America, Cold-War East Germany and Czechoslovakia

The Penn Libraries have acquired several digitized sets of U.S. State Department records hosted on Gale Cengage’s Archives Unbound platform. These new sets document mid-20th-century Latin American foreign relations and Cold War-era Eastern European internal affairs.

These sets reproduce U.S. State Department Central Files held by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, that is, Decimal Files from General Records of the Department of State, National Archives Record Group 59. They include correspondence between Washington DC and local embassies, reports from embassies, and other materials relating to internal conditions or to foreign relations, depending upon the specific file.

The new sets include:

  • Foreign Relations Between the U.S. and Latin America and the Caribbean States, 1930-1944. 82,212 images.
    Reproduces: Records of the U.S. Department of State relating to political relations between the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean states, 1930-1944 : Department of State decimal files 711.12-711.39 (69 reels. Scholarly Resources, 1988), with added content from other US State Department Central Files Decimal File ranges. These countries are covered in this set: Argentine Republic, Bolivia, Brazil, Central America, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the West Indian Republics.   • Foreign Relations between Latin America and the Caribbean States, 1930-1944. 105,704 images.
    This collection reproduces: Records of the U.S. Department of State relating to political relations of Latin America and the Caribbean states, 1930-1944 : Department of State decimal files 712-739 (90 reels. Scholarly Resources, 1988), with added content from other US State Department Central Files Decimal File ranges.     Gale Cengage reports that this collection comprises, in their entirety, the Scholarly Resources microfilm collections entitled Records of the U.S. Department of State relating to the internal affairs of the Russian Zone (East Germany), 1950-1954; Records of the U.S. Department of State Relating to Internal Affairs, Germany, 1955-1959 (4 reels. Scholarly Resources, 1987) and, Records of the U.S. Department of State Relating to Internal Affairs, East Germany, 1960-1963 (6 reels. Scholarly Resources, 2001).   • Czechoslovakia from Liberation to Communist State, 1945-63: Records of the U.S. State Department Classified Files. 52,359 images.
