Rev. Shojo Honda’s Collection

Tamon Honda, the son of the late Rev. Shojo Honda (1929-2015) of Arlington, Virginia, has generously donated his father’s book collection to Penn Libraries. The books focus on Buddhism and other Asian religions, history, and language; they are a mix of Japanese and English publications.

Michael Williams and Molly Des Jardin of the Japanese collection are beginning to process the books now and the items can be viewed in Franklin as they are added. They include many by the prominent Japanese literary scholar Konishi Jin’ichi (1915-2007), a personal acquaintance of Rev. Honda. The two are pictured in the 1986 photograph below (Rev. Honda in white on the left) which was tucked into one of Prof. Konishi’s books.
